Publishing & Print

Digital Printing
Offset litho printing

This is the most common method of professional printing, which works on the principle that grease and water repel one another! The printer uses the electronic artwork supplied to prepare printing plates. The plates are then wrapped around cylinders, wetted and then inked. Paper is usually fed into the printer in sheets or as a continuous roll.

Four-colour printing is the most common system for producing full colour print, where four printing plates are used, one for each of the four ink colours - Cyan (Blue), Magenta (Red),Yellow and Black - often referred to as CMYK.

As a copywriter, I believe that no matter what graphics you use, it's the words that sell. It is the designers task to provide visual cues that highlight text and graphic elements to encourage and empower a reader to either skim quickly to a specific snippet of information or to comfortably digest larger sections of the text.

Are you involved in approving the design of marketing material? Knowing some solid facts and figures about legibility will help you keep creative people on track.

I was a print designer before I was a web designer. Most graphic designers believe that the internet is just another medium - they look at website and can appreciate the colour, layout and graphics of a good site. Therefore when a client briefs them to design a website, they don't hesitate to take on the challenges of this new and exciting medium.

Spot Varnishing
Print Coatings & Tactile Print Processes

Use coatings to avoid fingerprinting, scuffing, smudging or cracking on glossy paper stock. Some coatings deepen the ink color they cover, yellow with age and/or may discolor white paper. You cannot glue or foil stamp over some coatings.

There are many different paper grades, weights and brands on the market from a variety of mills. Publishers select the type of paper that not only meets their customers' requirements, but also works well in their machinery.
